Week 12- initial post

What are the characteristics of an engaging Action Research Report? As I have worked on this paper I have found that it is not the most interesting thing to write. This helped me realize that if I am not having fun writing it what will the people who read it feel. With this in mind I needed to find a way to make it personal to students, families and teachers. I think my topic innately is relatable schools because the majority of families and teachers want to increase parent involvement. Another way I can make my action research paper more engaging is make it more than just black writing on a white background. If I was in my own classroom I might take pictures of students engaging in the topic my paper is on. I think it would be fun to take picture of a Remind screen with a message sent out. This would give the reader more of a visual representation of what it is like to send or receive a message through the Remind app. Action research papers can be made more engaging by getting t...

Week 11 reflection

I am feeling less behind and confused about this class. I had fun creating the very first survey that I am working to get sent out to a class and possibly an entire school about families involvement and preferred communication method. At this point after I have more data (right now I have 21 responses)  the next step is to start working on the writing portion of my paper. I have started working on my paper with the pieces I can write about that don't depend on results from the survey. I am not sure how many responses i need before I should start writing. I am feeling that it may be a case of having to stop accepting results because I would run out of time to finish my paper on time. I am also not sure if I can fit all the information I want to talk about in 10 minutes to stay within the allowed length of time for recording on the free Screencasteromatic. Well see how it goes.

Reflection week 10

This weeks question was one of the more enjoyable ones for me. I enjoyed looking up ethics challenges to action research. I found a lot of good scholarly resources which helped my post. I am still feeling very unguided in this class. I am not sure how to proceed with starting my paper and am not sure if I have what I need to say my research is completed. As I worked on this weeks blog post I found myself wondering how many ethical problems I may face as I work to complete this paper. Would it be more than if I picked a topic like using cell phones in the classroom.

Week 10 initial post

What primary concerns exist in ethics, validity, and reliability in AR? How are you managing these concerns (or how will you) within your study? To start this post I had to make sure I understood what the five principles of research ethics are. 1. Minimizing the risk of harm 2. Obtaining informed consent 3. Protection anonymity and confidentiality 4. Avoiding deceptive practices 5. Providing the right to withdraw With these 5 principles in mind I tackled this weeks essential question. As researcher it is important to never harm any one. Some ways search may cause the participant harm include physical harm, psychological discomfort, social disadvantage, and lack of privacy. I can prevent these from happening by always getting content from participants, protecting the confidentially of my students, avoiding possibly dishonest practices, and allowing families to remove themselves from any app. Informed consent is key to any successful classroom. This is also true for action res...

Week 9 reflection

HELP!!!! I am feeling very lost! I feel a disconnect with this class because I have such a hard time following the unstructured nature of the Twitter meetings. I much prefer Blackboard because I am very confused about how to proceed with this paper. I wonder if that also stems from not having my own classroom. I really love to get some guidance on this assignment so I am not feeling so far behind. Were we supposed to do something called Critical Friend in week 7? I haven't seen any mention of that or what we are supposed to do. Also I would love to know when the paper is actually due?

Week 9 initial post

For my data I will be looking more at the patterns, trends, and how the use of the Remind app affects parent involvement. I will look at what ways Remind can be used to increase the attendance of parent teacher conferences, classroom volunteers, and its effectiveness at distributing classroom newsletters and sudden announcements. I liked Jules idea of writing down a poll of what parents would be interested in using the Remind app and which parents prefer printed copies of announcements, and schedules. I will also be able to use the app itself to see which parents are actively involved in posts uploaded to the app. I am also hoping to create a bit of a test for parents to see which gets more responses. I will send out a printed copy of a letter that requires a parent signature or permission. I will post the same if not similar document on Remind and see which gets more responses.

Week 8 reflection

When I went back to write this post I realized I never posted my week 8 initial post. So I apologize for that. I guess I saved it as a draft instead of actually publishing it. It has just been one of those weeks. I think I struggled with this weeks essential question. I feel I didn't do as concise of explains what data mining is and it's misuses. I am feeling very unsure of the course of this class. In my other class we are on week 11 and I am only on week 9 for this class. I am worried I may have to rush or cram a few weeks work in a short period of time because we are behind. Referring to this weeks topic I found myself not too interested exploring more about data mining, because I struggled to find resources that were easy and simple to understand. I found a lot of them quite confusing and didn't aid me in completing my blog post for this week.

Week 8 initial post

This week we are focusing on data mining. I have to be honest before I started this post I had never heard of the term data mining, so I was very interested to learn more about it. According to statsoft.com, data mining is "an analytic process designed to explore data in search of consistent patterns and/or systematic relationships between variables" (2017). A simpler way to this of this concept is to think of the goal bing predicting. Data mining has also been referred to as "knowledge discovery in databases." With the application of this concept to education teachers can predict student performance before they set foot in a classroom and develop an intervention strategy to keep them on course. Data mining helps teachers access student data, product achievement, and find students who may need extra attention.  Data mining can be used in improving student models or models that detail information about student's knowledge, motivation, metacognition, and att...
